St. Vincent de Paul

The St. Vincent de Paul District Council of Lexington is seeking a president for the St. Vincent de Paul Conference at the Cathedral of Christ the King. The Conferences are affiliated with diocesan parishes and work independently. The leader will be responsible for attending CCB (Community Church Builder) training at the parish, contact those interested in service with the ministry as indicated from the stewardship renewal commitment cards, and attending quarterly ministry meetings with other ministry leaders and staff. Additionally,
the St. Vincent de Paul president will:

• Schedule and chair meetings
• Schedule Vincentians to answer the SVdP phone on Mondays (SVdP office is in the basement of the
• O'Neill Center.)
• Schedule Vincentians to make home visitations on Mondays
• Log home visitation information logging the number of people helped and voucher dollar amounts.
• File an annual report through the national SVdP website
• Coordinate the Christmas basket delivery effort on a Saturday in mid-December (Scheduling Vincentians and working with the Kroger on Euclid for basket preparation.)
• Attend bi-monthly District Council meetings

• With the COVID-19 pandemic still a major concern, home visits are not being conducted.  However, SVdP is still helping families in need by mailing food and clothing vouchers every Monday.
• The SVdP grocery store at the Griffith-Ballard Towers remains closed.
• SVdP continues to help quarterly, our sister parish, Holy Trinity in Harlan, Kentucky.
• SVdP continues to help quarterly, the NewHope Clinic in Owingsville, Kentucky.

• Again due to the pandemic, SVdP will not be distributing baskets this Christmas.  As an alternative, a $50 food voucher will be mailed to fifty families who have been recently helped, or will be helped in the coming weeks.  It was felt this was the best way to keep everyone safe by reducing exposure, and yet still be able to assist families in the Christmas season.
• If you are currently holding food vouchers and would be willing to mail some Christmas vouchers, please let me know.

• In addition:
  • Quarterly support was provided as described above in "Current activities."
  • Monies were donated to the SVdP Conference at St. Peter here in Lexington.  This practice is called "Twinning" by the Society.
  • Monies were donated to St. Julian in Middlesboro, Kentucky for repairs at the church and to purchase 2019 Christmas baskets.  A reminder; this is Father Kiran's parish.
  • Children's winter coats were purchased from the Knights of Columbus.  (Additional coats were donated by K of C.)  The coats were delivered to Holy Trinity for distribution.

Volunteers:
Parishioners serve those in need by making face-to-face home visits to distribute food and clothing vouchers. Some serve at the grocery store at the Griffith-Ballard towers in downtown Lexington, providing accessible shopping for those at this assisted living facility.

Mission Details:

• (Option 1) Home Visits- are made every Monday (except holidays) to six families.  Three teams of Vincentians visit two families each. Visits are made around 5:30 PM if you work full-time. Vincentians who are retired usually make visits as soon as they receive their assignment.
• (Option 2) SVDP Phone Line- one Vincentian answers the SVdP phone in the O'Neill Center on Monday mornings to take calls and see which families are eligible for assistance. Assignments are made (usually by late morning) for each team.
• (Option 3) Serve at the Griffith-Ballard- Work at the grocery store is shared with three other SVdP Conferences in Lexington. So the CTK Conference works at the store every fourth week. The store is open Wednesday afternoons from 1 to 4 PM and Saturday mornings from 9 AM to Noon.
• (Option 4) Assist with inventory/stock- Help is needed with shopping to stock the store, tracking inventory and stocking store shelves

Commitment:
Annual. Meet the last Wednesday of each month, 7:00 pm in the PLC, plus one option:

• Option 1—Conduct two home visits to deliver vouchers one Monday afternoon monthly.
• Option 2—Answer the SVDP phone line (in O’Neill Center) Monday morning, 1 to 2x monthly.
• Option 3—Serve customers at the Griffith-Ballard store every fourth week on either Wed. or Sat.
• Option 4—Assist with inventory and shopping for goods to replenish stock in G-B store.
• Option 5—Provide holiday food baskets to families in need through donations and/or service.
