Our Guadalupe Chapel originally served as the Baptistry. This description along with the photo was published in booklet introducing the newly constructed Christ the King Parish to the public.
“The Baptistry, octagonal in shape, and located near the vestibule suggesting the initial reception of new communicants into the mystical body of Christ. It is approached from the main area through aluminum and bronze gates, symbolically decorated. The Chi Rho is the dominant feature supporting the anchor and shell. An undulating form, suggesting water, descends from the shell. Traditional fish forms are biblical connotation of the faithful. The mammoth Font, centering this stained glass windowed octagonal room is like the main altar, made of Vert d’ Issorte marble. The top is cast bronze with a pivoted section to cover the basin. Hovering above the font is a descending dove emanating rays which terminate in seven flame-like forms typifying the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.”
The committee overseeing the restoration project has consulted with Brother Martin Erspamer, OSB, a Benedictine Monk at St. Meinrad Archabbey and well-known liturgical artist. He visited the Cathedral of Christ the King on June 11, 2020 to spend time in the chapel observing how all the elements from floor to ceiling. Brother Martin returned on July 15th to present various options and artistic renderings of Mary. We are now charged with discerning how we want to proceed. We invite you to review Brother Erspamer's presentation and contact us with comments.
